Select fresh head gaskets that match the exact M8 bore, cylinder-head surfaces, and build configuration before installing the S&S bolts.
Before assembly, confirm that every mating surface is free of debris and defects that could affect gasket sealing or head installation.
Follow the illustrated cylinder order through finger-tight, 10, 25, 45, and 65 ft-lb; loosen each bolt one-quarter turn at a time in reverse order; then repeat the complete staged sequence.
Use S&S Instruction 510-0662 for the head bolts and the correct motorcycle service information for all remaining cylinder-head disassembly and reassembly.
Have AVT or a qualified engine builder complete the work when surface condition, gasket choice, torque accuracy, or assembly procedure is uncertain.
When it applies: Recommended whenever any required measurement, tool, surface, sequence, or torque value cannot be positively verified.
Use a calibrated torque wrench and 9/16-inch 12-point socket that can accurately complete every 10, 25, 45, and 65 ft-lb pass.
Lubricate only the internal threads and underside of each new S&S head bolt with clean engine oil before beginning the torque sequence.
